Countries like China, United Kingdom treat the performance of their team at the olympics as a matter of national pride and promising young athletes are spotted at a young age, to give them the necessary training, diet and support so that they become world beaters.

On the other hand, there is relatively less encouragement and incentives for young indian athletes to take up sports as a career. Some of the most successful indian sportspersons like Bindra and Sania Mirza come from relatively wealthy families who could afford to fund their training and other expenses.

Others like Raghavendra Rathore were working in the army and had access to the best facilities which most civilians do not have access to.
